Construction of “Shanghai-Nanjing Express Highway on Water” Begins Next Month

The Channel Management of Nanjing Bureau of Communications announced that a convenient passage on water will appear with capacity of thousands of ton when the renovation on the Gao Chun—Li Yang section of Wu Shen Canal will be completed in 2012. The distance will be shortened by 85km compared with that across the Yangtze River. Thus, experts honor it as a “Shanghai-Nanjing Express Highway on Water”. The section of Nanjing-Shanghai in Yangtze River is shaped like “弓”, while the Wu Shen Canal is like a straight line.

It is said that the renovation on the channel at the third level of Gao Chun—Li Yang section of Wu Shen Canal has started and will be finished in 2012 with 3.353 billion Yuan. According to experts on water transport, the thousand-ton ships can go by the Wu Shen Canal instead of the Yangtze River. Thus, the distance will be shortened and the cost of fuel will be saved by over 1000 Yuan. Besides, the Wu Shen Canal is through the Long Triangle area where has developed economy. Since water transportation is the main transportation for large freights, goods from the upriver can be delivered to the Long Triangle area by Wu Shen Canal. Its significance is as great as a new Shanghai-Nanjing express highway. (Nanjing Daily)
