Railway: The railways of Nanjing are key sections of the most important traffic route in East China. Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge,Nanjing No. 2 Yangtze River Bridge and the largest electrified and mechanized modern marshalling yard for freight trains in East China link up the networks of highways and railways on either side of the River. The 4 trunk railways of Beijing to Nanjing,,Shanghai to Nanjing,Nanjing to Wuhu in Anhui and wuhu to Yingtan in Jiangxi all meet in Nanjing,connecting with major trunk railways and large and medium sized cities all over China. So Nanjing is an essential railway hub to connect with Central China,East China and North China. The speed of passenger trains and freight trains has been raised in an all-round way. Passenger trains are running from Nanjing to over 20 provinces,municipalities and autonomous regions in China,such as Beijing,Shanghai,Guangdong,Xinjiang and Heilongjiang.

Highway: Nanjing is one of the highway hubs in the country,with four national highways and nine provincial highways meeting here. It is the first municipality in the province that has expressways to all counties,paved highways to all townships and highways to all villages. The expressways are well through and have by and large formed a network,ramifying in all directions with the main urban area as the center. The Shanghai-Nanjing Expressway has added a convenient golden land route for southern Jiangsu and the whole area of the Yangtze River Delta. The trunk highways have been upgraded and more been built,and a modern network of highways with the expressways and Grade I highways as the main routes has been initially formed.

Waterway: Nanjing is situated in the lower reaches of the golden waterway of Yangtze River,and Nanjing Harbor is the largest inland river harbor in China and along Yangtze River,being an important river and land transit harbor and a hub for relay water transport in East China. The harbor area extends for a total length of 208 kilometers,with over 300 jetties of different sizes,210 berths of 1000T class or over,including 27 berths of 10000T class. The warehouse area totals about 620,000 square meter,and there is dedicated railway line of about 1.8km (7500m for internal loading and unloading). It has the largest petroleum shipping jetty,the largest coal dock and largest foreign trade shipping dock along Yangtze River.

The construction of the container dock of Longtan Harbor with a total investment of over 1 billion yuan has started,and 3 of 35000 w.t. class berths (with provisions for access by 50000 w.t. vessels) and 2 of thousand w.t. class special berths for container vessels will be built,for a design annual throughput of 520,000 TEG. The main body of the works is expected to complete by the end of 2003.

Nanjing Harbor Xinshengwei automobile roll-on roll-off dock has one 10000T class berth and one 1000T class berth,with an annual design handling capacity of 363,000 automobiles,being the largest dock of this type along Yangtze River,and an important channel for transport of automobiles produced in Nanjing. Nanjing Harbor boasts excellent conditions for goods collection and distribution,complete in all modes of transportation,with waterways linking Yangtze River and its many branches. Nanjing has established close shipping ties with harbors in all countries,has opened container liner routes with international harbors of Japan and Korea. The railway in the harbor area is linked with the state railway network,there is a highway network ramifying in all directions,and the oil conveying pipeline from Shandong to Nanjing is linked with the harbor. Nanjing Harbor has navigation routes to 165 harbors in 80 countries and regions,and shipping of foreign trade cargo and containers has been developing rapidly in the harbor.

The Xinshengwei zone of Nanjing Harbor has a water depth of over 12m all the year round,and can accept 12 ocean-going vessels at or above 25000 w.t. concurrently. Cargoes are shipped from here to 188 harbors in 78 countries and regions in the world. There are over 10 international shipping routes,with annual handling capacity of 10 million tons for foreign trade cargo and 285,000 TEG containers.

Aviation: Nanjing Lukou International Airport is one of the important trunk line airports in China,an main freight airport in East China,and mutually as backup airport for Hongqiao and Pudong Airports of Shanghai.

Nanjing Lukou International Airport now has a handling capacity of 12 million passengers and 400,000 tons of cargo and mails per year.

It has opened 78 domestic and overseas (regional) flight routes,including 8 international routes (Nanjing-Hong Kong,Nanjing-Macao,Nanjing-Korea,Nanjing-Thailand,Nanjing-Singapore,Nanjing-Japan,Nanjing-Canada and Nanjing-Russia).

International flights have been opened: Nanjing-Hong Kong,Nanjing-Macao,Nanjing-Seoul,Nanjing-Bangkok,Nanjing-Singapore,Nanjing-Japan,Nanjing-US.

In April 2003,passenger flight will be opened from Nanjing to Tokyo.

In April 2003,cargo flight will be opened: Nanjing - Chicago and Nanjing - Macao- Taiwan.

In September 2003,cargo flight will be opened: Nanjing- Amsterdam of Holland

Pipeline: Pipeline transportation in Nanjing is mainly composed of Shandong-to-Nanjing petroleum pipeline. It stems from Linyi of Shandong,passes through the 4 provinces of Shandong,Hebei,Anhui and Jiangsu and ends at the oil transit depot in Nanjing. This pipeline has laid a solid foundation for Nanjing's petrochemical industry.

Urban Traffic: Nanjing now has roads in urban districts for a total length of 3850 km (including 5368 km in newly developed zones). The city's network of public transport lines in operation is 1446 kilometers,with a total of nearly 4360 buses. Dedicated lines for city touring and sightseeing are now in operation,and about 10000 taxis provide round-the-clock services. The urban roads has by and large formed a network with "rings in main urban area,rings and networks mutually linked,and all intersections well through".
