Nanjing is one of China's 8 large centers for long-distance exchange and telecommunication. It has a communication network composed of multiple modes of transmission, such as wire, cable, optical cable, microwave, short-wave and satellite, including various domestic and international fixed telecommunication network services, local wireless looping, voice, data, image and multi-media communication and information serviced based on telecom network. Major events can be relayed through the earth satellite to every place in China as well as every country in the world. Nanjing is the first in the country to open the wide band LAN service, and high-speed access to Internet is being spread to all parts of the city. The total exchanging capacity is 2.46 million extensions, with 1.82 million telephone users and over 400,000 Internet users. The multiform communication means has been achieved, thus bringing Nanjing into the era of multimedia communication. Nanjing has opened express mail service with nearly 200 countries and regions and set up an airmail transit station at Lukou International Airport.
