Cedar was designated as the city tree of Nanjing according to the decision made through the discussion at the Eighth Session of the Eighth Conference of the Standing Committee of People's Congress of Nanjing on April 19, 1982. Cedar, marked by its imposing appearance, firmness and defiance of freezing cold in winter and unbearable heat in summer, is very popular among people in Nanjing. Cedar, with a history of over 60 years in Nanjing, is extensively planted in the city. Nanjing is also the base for cedar propagation. Therefore, it is quite appropriate to take cedar as the city tree of Nanjing.
