SYSTEM
Nanjing (Nanking) lies some 300 km northwest of Shanghai and has a population of 5.2 million (6,500 sq km).
Construction of Metro Line 1 began in 2000 for completion in September 2005. Line 1 will be 17 km (10.62 km is underground, 6.37 km is above ground) with 13 stations.
All stations are underground except Xiaohang, Zhonghuamen, Hongshan Zoo, Maigaoqiao, Andemen.
Line NO.1
From North to South they are:
Maigaoqiao - Hongshan Zoo - Nanjing Railway Station - Xinmofan Road - Xuanwumen - Gulou - Zhujiang Road - Xinjiekou - Zhangfuyuan - Sanshan Street - Zhonghuamen - Andemen - Xiaohang

27 Aug 2005: Opening of Line 1 Maigaoqiao - Xiaohang
03 Sept 2005: Xiaohang - Olympic Stadium (and official opening)
Projects
Nanjing metro No.2 line is now under examination by experts, and is expected to put into realization. The 26.6-km-long subway will have 22 stations, with the main line running from the west to east of the city.
The next line, Line 3, was announced to run from Jiangxinzhou to Xianhomen (15 km) via Xinjiekuo. It will eventually be 43 km long. Construction of the first stage began in Jan. 2006 for completion in 2009.
