The City of Nanjing began its sister city program in 1978 with Nagoya, Japan. Since then the City has signed sisterhood agreements with 13 cities in the world .

The main purpose of the sister city program is to strengthen relations between Nanjing, China and other international cities in an effort to establish global cooperation and to promote cultural understanding.
