St. Louis is located in the central part of the United States and on the Mississippi River. It covers an area of 158 square kilometers and has a population of 620,000. It is the largest city in the state of Missouri and the center for manufacturing, education and scientific research. It is flourishing in aircraft and automobile manufacturing, chemical, petrochemical and electrical appliance industry. In the period of America's expansion to the west, it was the only way leading to the west and therefore was referred to as the gateway to the West.
