Sheffield is England's 4th largest city with a shopping, leisure and cultural centre of regional significance. It has not, unlike cities of a similar size, developed as a fully fledged regional capital. The city's economy was built on its steel, engineering and cutlery industries which have established a worldwide reputation for quality products. Yet whilst Sheffield remains one of the country's foremost manufacturing areas and a centre for advanced engineering, the predominant feature of the local economy over the last thirty years has been the steady growth of service industries.
Labour availability in Sheffield is attractive to employers and this is enhanced by a unique recruitment and training service known as JOBMatch, which offers new employers a free service to help them make a quickstart in operations here.
As a focal point within South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire, Sheffield is a natural location for Europe's largest shopping and leisure complex, Meadowhall, situated in the Lower Don Valley area. Over 20 million people visited the complex in its first year of trading averaging about 400,000 per week. The World Student Games attracted a lot of attention to the city and has left the city with some of the best sporting and leisure facilities in the country. These facilities include a 25,000 seater athletics stadium and a 10,000 seater arena and exhibition centre both of which are now being booked up for major sporting and leisure events. Sheffield Crucible Theatre is a very successful provincial theatre, offering a range of productions and plays. The Cruicible also stages the annual World Snooker Tournament. The Peak District is on Sheffield's doorstep offering not only a tourist attraction but a very pleasant living environment for commuters into the city. |
